I am always on the lookout for exotic ingredients that can add a unique twist to my dishes. Recently, I stumbled upon safflower, a vibrant and fiery flower essential to Chinese cuisine. The locals were kind enough to give me a quick lesson on the history and uses of safflower, and I was amazed to learn about its medicinal properties and its importance in traditional Chinese medicine.

Safflower has been used for centuries to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation. In Chinese culture, safflower tea is often served to women to ease menstrual cramps and alleviate postpartum pain. Besides its medicinal properties, safflower is also an essential ingredient in many Chinese dishes, adding a distinctive flavor and aroma to stir-fries, soups, and stews.

One of my favorite recipes that incorporates safflower is a spicy and savory stir-fry with beef and mixed vegetables.
